Qualifications and Skills:

- Proven 5 years experience in building surveying or a similar role.
- Strong knowledge of building regulations, health and safety standards, and construction methods.

Job Description
The successful candidate will join one of the largest family-run construction businesses, dealing with exciting and challenging projects across multiple sectors. For this role, you must be ambitious, self-motivated, and able to work independently and within our team of like-minded individuals.
You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and need to hold a clean driving license. You must be a conscientious, organised, and proactive team player, highly motivated and committed to achieving company targets and always focused on the task. You should be able to use your initiative and prioritise effectively to meet tight deadlines, working independently or as part of a team.
This is an office-based role, working alongside and with the existing Estimating Team in Cambridge. There will be the flexibility to work in different offices, depending on location.
Experience in leading Commercial, MOD, Education and Healthcare projects would be ideal but not essential. Also experience within various procurement routes such as D&B, Traditional and 2 Stage, valuing from £2million to circa £30million would be useful but not essential. Our senior team will give further guidance and training. Our current working sectors include healthcare, education, defence, R&D, life sciences, commercial and industrial and some residential (apartments and student residential).
This role would be suited to an intermediate estimator looking for his next move with a financially secure and stable organisation that is expanding and developing into new regions. Alternatively, this would also suit an experienced estimator who is looking to move to a larger company, share their experience with a developing estimating team, and develop a career with a forward-thinking business that aims to promote from within.
The Estimator Role:
- Producing cost plans from RIBA stage 0 (elementally on historical data) to stage 3 (fully measured and rated). Ideally, the ability to price from first principles is needed.
- Taking off from drawings using Autodesk Design Review to produce detailed cost plans and quantity checks on the produced BQs
- Leading the tender enquiry process
- Allocation of elemental BQ items into works packages
- Subcontractor comparisons & identifying scope gaps
- Working with the supply chain to provide value engineering options
- Pricing of site preliminaries
- Providing information on key risks and opportunities at tender settlement
- Using BCIS data to elementally benchmark TPIs for inflation forecasting & rebasing with location factorisation
- Pricing competitive tenders under the direction of the estimating director
- Reviewing contracts and other commercial data
- Attending client meetings
- Presenting tender information to project teams
- Reviewing tender documents before pricing and completing the ‘Enquiry Checklist’ to determine the pricing level
- Taking off groundwork’s packages
- Completing ‘Risk and Opportunity’ Registers
- Liaising with the buying department to obtain material quotations
- Pricing groundworks on Labour, Plant and Materials basis for Pre-Construction Manager's review
- Tender adjudication with the Commercial Director
- Pricing variations and additions
- Creating material lists and obtaining and comparing quotations
- Conducting site visits
Key skills required:
Team player, ability to work under pressure & strong time management skills
Good organisation skills
Computer skills: You need to be proficient in Microsoft Office packages. Experience with Causeway and Excel estimating software is desired.
Excellent spoken and written English.
A good, clear telephone manner is essential as there will be client interaction during the daily work, including team meetings.
Demonstrating a strong work ethic throughout their career is essential.
Strong numeracy skills with the ability to think commercially

- Mechanical parts… You can make them flawlessly based on an engineering drawing.
- You always first delve into the drawing to avoid overlooking any detail.
- You then set up the CNC machine and get going (milling).
- You start up production and then monitor progress (pre-production, batch production, etc.)
- You perform preventive or corrective basic maintenance on the machinery or equipment.
- You adjust the tools for positioning and clamping workpieces.
- You also mount and adjust cutting tools, position and clamp the piece, and then set the machining parameters (speed, progress, throughput, lubrication, etc.)
- You program the machine based on the plan in CNC code.
- You determine the workpiece and tool's various machining stages and adjustment values (tolerance, position, surface state, etc.).

Brief Description / Purpose of the function:
Responsible for the daily running of the factory, managing Process Performance, People, Machines, Materials Methods and Measurement of Performance and Improvement. The Production Manager adds value by leading an effective Lean Management System that continuously improves performance across Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, and People (SQDCP).
The main areas of responsibility are as follows but are not limited to:

Brief Description / Purpose of the function:
As a CNC Shop Team Leader, you will oversee the daily operations of the CNC shop floor, ensuring that Production targets are met efficiently and safely. You will lead a team of CNC operators’ setters and programmers, providing guidance, support, and training as necessary. The role requires strong technical knowledge of CNC machining processes and excellent leadership and communication skills.
The main areas of responsibility are as follows but are not limited to:
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of the CNC shop floor team, including CNC operators, setters, programmers and support staff.
- Assist the planning team in prioritising production schedules to meet customer demands and deadlines.
- Monitor machine performance and efficiency, troubleshooting any issues and ensuring optimal productivity.
- Train new team members on CNC machining techniques, safety procedures, and quality standards.
- Conduct regular feedback sessions and provide feedback to team members to encourage growth and development.
- Maintain inventory levels of raw materials, tooling, and supplies and coordinate with the purchasing department for replenishment.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and company policies on the shop floor.
- Collaborate with engineering and design teams to optimize CNC programs and improve machining processes.
- Collaborate with the Production Manager and Quality Team on Implementing continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and increase overall productivity.
- Act as a liaison between management and shop floor employees, addressing any concerns or issues raised by the team.
- Operation and setting of machinery, CNC manual machines and milling/lathe to facilitate the manufacture of components as required.
- Complete relevant ‘start-up’ & ‘close-down’ processes as identified within the department.
- Ensure consistent quality of parts produced.
- Be proactive in ensuring work has all the necessary tooling to avoid downtime.
- Ensure all work and raw materials in your area are correctly identified with the relevant paperwork.
- Carry out machine or process changeovers where requested.
- Assist with production machining when not involved with setting or supervisory duties.
- Assist with stocking and selection of tooling/cutters.
- Communicate efficiently with other team members and work as part of a team.
- Communicate any issues, breakdowns to the Manufacturing Manager, Maintenance and/or other supervision, in person, via email or communication book.
- Maintain and enforce good housekeeping, a healthy and safe work environment and the safe use of equipment and machinery.
- Ensure any health and safety concerns and/or issues are communicated/passes to the Health & Safety Manager.
Qualification / Cards:
- HNC in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent experience
- Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience in CNC machining operations, with a strong understanding of CNC programming, setup, and operation
